Rationale
Our qualifications pathway is designed to recognise every young person’s achievement and provide meaningful routes for success. For pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), accreditation is not just about gaining certificates — it is about celebrating progress, building self-belief, and preparing for the next stage of learning or life.
From Key Stage 2 through to Key Stage 4, we ensure that every child has opportunities to experience success at their own pace. Each phase builds carefully on the last, helping learners move from small, skill-based achievements to nationally recognised qualifications.
This progressive approach supports independence, confidence, and readiness for adulthood. We believe that qualifications should be accessible, motivating, and relevant to real life — helping students see the connection between what they learn in school and the world beyond it.
Our Approach
We focus on developing the whole child. Academic learning, personal development, and life skills are all valued equally. The qualifications we offer are chosen because they allow students to show what they can do, rather than focus on what they cannot yet do.
Assessment is continuous and is based on teacher assessment as well as baselined work and assessments. As students’ progress, they gain increasing experiences of more formal assessments. Students are always well prepared for any kind of assessment, and they are delivered in supportive ways, that build confidence rather than anxiety.
It is very important for our pupils to know the reasons why we are asking them to learn about certain things. We know that if they can see the relevance in the learning, their engagement is good, and they are more likely to understand and retain and apply learning. It is important that the qualifications we offer hold meaning for pupils and they see their value.
Each Key Stage plays a role in preparing for the next:
- Key Stage 2 introduces the idea of accreditation through short, practical and achievable awards
- KS3 builds in more structured programmes and entry level qualifications
- KS4 runs exams weeks three times a year where pupils can sit nationally recognised qualifications of varying levels, which support transitions to college, training or emloyment
Supporting EHCP Outcomes and Preparation for Adulthood
Our accreditation pathway directly supports pupils’ Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) outcomes. Each qualification contributes to the development of communication, learning, social interaction, and independence skills.
As learners move towards Key Stage 4, qualifications prepare them for adulthood by building skills for community participation, employability, and independent living. Many courses include practical, hands-on elements such as cooking, enterprise, and teamwork projects which mirror real-life contexts and strengthen each student’s readiness for life beyond school.
Skills Builder
To complement the qualifications we offer, our students are also building a portfolio of their growing skills known as Skills Builder. Colleges are also beginning to implement Skills Builder and organisations such as, the Careers & Enterprise Company, Amazon, NCS Trust and The Manufacturing Technology Centre have also partnered with the program. It is important to showcase that ability to pass exams successfully is not always a key indicator of workplace success.
Understanding Functional Skills and Equivalence
Students will sit Functional Skills qualifications in English, Maths, and Digital Skills focus on applying learning to everyday life. These qualifications are highly valued by employers and further education providers because they demonstrate the ability to use essential skills confidently in real situations.

Functional Skills Level 2 is recognised as equivalent to a Grade 4 in GCSE English or Maths — a key standard for college courses, apprenticeships, and employment. This ensures that every learner has the opportunity to leave school with qualifications that open doors to their next steps.

Progression Through the Key Stages
Key Stage 2 (9-11yrs): Building Confidence and Engagement
In Key Stage 2, pupils begin to experience formal recognition of their achievements through AQA Unit Awards. These are small, flexible certificates that celebrate success in specific skills or topics — from communication and creativity to problem-solving and teamwork.
This stage focuses on:
- Encouraging curiosity and enthusiasm for learning.
- Building confidence through achievable targets.
- Introducing pupils to the idea of evidence-based learning.
Each success is celebrated, helping pupils associate accreditation with pride and progress.
AQA Unit Awards
We offer AQA Unit Awards to recognise and celebrate the achievements of all our pupils in a flexible and personalised way. By offering these to pupils early on in their school journey we can begin to prepare pupils for exams in the future and get them to feel comfortable with completing a unit’s requirements. This nationally recognised scheme allows pupils to earn certificates for completing Units, helping to build confidence, motivation, and a sense of success. By offering these awards, we ensure every student’s efforts are recognised, they experience success early on, and they are well prepared for future qualifications.
Key Stage 3 (12-14 years): Developing Skills and Independence
In Key Stage 3, pupils begin to work towards structured, nationally recognised qualifications. They start to see how their learning connects to real-life skills and future opportunities.
Accreditations include:
- Pearson Edexcel Entry Level 3 – Digital Functional Skills
- ASDAN Short Courses – flexible, practical courses that promote teamwork, problem-solving, and self-management.
- ASDAN Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards – Personal Development Programmes
- BTEC Level 1 Home Cooking Skills – promoting healthy living and independence through practical learning.
This stage builds resilience, encourages responsibility, and helps pupils gain confidence with more formal assessment processes. Digital Functional Skills is taken online, in exam conditions. All other qualifications are coursework-based.
ASDAN Personal Development Programmes (Gold, Silver and Bronze)
The ASDAN Personal Development Programmes are designed to help all pupils thrive by offering engaging, motivating, and personalized learning experiences. We deliver this qualification because it supports the growth of each learner, helping them to build confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of self-belief. Through a variety of creative and practical activities, pupils develop important life and work-related skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. The course also supports their learning in English and maths and allows pupils to see how their learning in core subjects is relevant in practical scenarios.
The course is assessed through a portfolio of evidence in in Key Stage 3. This allows pupils to learn and practice how to put together a portfolio so that when they take their Personal Effectiveness qualification in Key Stage 4, they are already know how to create a portfolio.

ASDAN Short Courses
ASDAN offer short courses in order to support pupils to build skills that not only address a particular area of interest but that encourage independence, planning skills and support their learning in English and maths as well as their EHCP targets. These courses can also count as credits towards the ASDAN Personal Effectiveness Qualification (PEQ). There are a huge number of short courses, so can easily be tailored to children’s specific interests and strengths. Courses on offer include Enterprise, Hospitality, Sport and Leisure, Careers, PSHE and independent living skills.
Pearson Entry Level 3/Level 1 Digital Functional Skills
Digital Functional Skills equips learners with practical, workplace-relevant digital skills, enhancing employability and everyday life. This qualification provides evidence of achievement, assesses knowledge application, and offers a pathway to further education or employment. It has a focus on real-world scenarios, building confidence and fluency in using digital tools.
The course is assessed through an online external examination.
Digital Functional Skills | Pearson qualifications
BTEC Level 1/Level 2 Home Cooking
We know that a large number of our pupils face challenges around food and diet. Teaching BTEC Home Cooking Skills equips pupils with essential life skills, fosters healthy eating habits and empowers them to cook for themselves and others. It addresses the growing reliance on pre-prepared foods, contributing to their understanding of meal planning, budgeting, and food safety. The course also provides a foundation for potential college courses, apprenticeships and careers in the food industry.
This course is assessed through a portfolio of practical and theory work with a specific assignment brief which pupils must complete.
